Don Powers is an architect at Union Studio Architecture and Community Design. He designed his own plans to renovate his family’s century-old New England cottage in Jamestown, Rhode Island. Energy-saving technologies and energy-generating systems aim to produce all the energy the home will need.
The home features enhancements such as an elevated kitchen, open dining with built-in banquette, spacious living room and an upstairs hall that doubles as a library which faces laundry facilities on the opposite wall.
Its design uses Baird Brothers quarter sawn white oak flooring, interior doors, stair treads and risers, along with a graceful new handrail for the expanded front entry. The Powers chose Baird quarter sawn white oak to provide a warm, seamless backdrop for their furnishings. The light and airy bath redesign is finished with Baird Brothers horizontal poplar shiplap interior siding, while additional shiplap is used for ceilings, to bring the cottage look throughout the home.
To “This Old House,” this is part of a 40th year celebration. To the Powers family, this was a journey home. To you, this is a chance to use the same Baird products for the place you love.
“This Old House” and Sweenor Builders, along with many home renovation product manufacturers and craftspeople — including Baird Brothers Fine Hardwoods — helped make the Powers family dream a beautiful reality.
It’s too early to tell if they will meet their net-zero energy ideal, but the photos below demonstrate that an old house from the 1920s can become a warm and wonderful success worthy of the show’s 40th anniversary.

Since 1960, Baird Brothers have been America’s source for fine hardwood products. Baird is proud to make high quality hardwood for the place you love — and do so here in the U.S.A. where craftsmanship is still a human art. Baird manufactures natural hardwood and accent parts, including mouldings, handrails, stair parts, T & G flooring and paneling, S4S lumber and many other products.
Whether custom-designed or standard favorites, the brothers Baird offer a full range of timeless classics as well as the latest design trends. Here are the Baird Brothers products used on this project:
Baird Brothers quality solid hardwood floors are precision milled because we know that you are making an investment to last a lifetime (or two). Baird hardwood floors are available in every domestic specie, including Red Oak, White Oak, Hard Maple, Hickory, Cherry, Ash, Walnut, Quarter Sawn Red or White Oak, and tropical species like Brazilian Cherry (Jatoba).
This on-trend rustic modern paneling is a farmhouse-inspired, stylish addition to any room in your home, as popularized by “Fixer Upper”’s Joanna and Chip Gaines. Baird Brothers shiplap has many advantages over plank wood, particleboard or high density fiberboard. It's very smooth because the wood fibers used in its manufacture are uniform and fine.
Baird Brothers premium hardwood stair parts are stocked in Poplar, Red Oak, Maple, and Cherry. Baird can pre-finish your stair parts with a clear finish or you can choose one of Baird Brothers’ ten stain colors. Custom hardwood handrail, stair treads, turnings, and other hardwood species not listed are available upon request.
